Swampgirl Pottery
Meet the Maker, Louisiana native Carol Myers, of Swampgirl Pottery based in California.
Carol mixes the streamlined modern shapes of midcentury design with the primitive aesthetics of clay to create handcrafted pottery you’ll enjoy for a lifetime. She hand builds and hand glazes ceramic place settings, pasta & serving bowls, serving platters and appetizer plates. All in a multitude of dynamic colors and textures.
Carol grew up in a sleepy Louisiana town and started making art at five years old. After college she moved to France, where the richness of French food and culture helped form her creative aesthetic. Carol relocated to NYC after four years and found a home in the photography industry where she worked as a photographer, photo editor and eventually a photo agent running her own photography agency for many years.
At these editorial shoots, Carol recognized the need for beautiful unique vessels to use for food photography for magazines. This is what led her to start making her own pottery. Prop stylists and photographers started to take notice when she arrived at photoshoots with her own gorgeous, one-of-a-kind dishes. Soon she was selling her work to all of the large Manhattan prop houses.
After more than 30 years as a New Yorker, Carol recently moved to the California sunshine where she works full time as a ceramic artist. Of her work Carol says, “pottery is a very mindful practice. It requires one to be present in the moment. There is something very grounding about working with my hands in the clay.”
